The Wonderful World of Cupcakes

I am currently putting together a morning tea for my colleagues to celebrate the organisation's third birthday.  Wanting to do something extra special I thought of jumping on the cupcake bandwagon.  In my research I not only discovered how easy it is to make any event sweet and glamorous, but also discovered a surprising amount of small businesses and decorations dedicated to our sweet teeth right here in Melbourne.

Most businesses will create custom cupcakes for your event or organisation, and even have online stores to purchase decorations (think edible glitter and images) and supplies so you can bake your own masterpieces at home.

Here are a couple of my favourites:

Apart from doing beautiful traditional cupcakes for birthdays, weddings and corporate events (your company logo on a cupcake - I like it), they also do cocktail cupcakes - are you kidding me?!

Specialises in all things sweet.  Think cookies, chocolates and decorations as well as stencils, wrappers and gifts (for the baker!)

An amazing array of flavours here from cookies and cream to lemon meringue...yum!

Beautifully displayed and decorated and a fantastic array of imaginative flavours.  My favourite has got to be "The Hangover" (cinnamon cupcake injected with mapel syrup, mapel syrup frosting and bacon crumbles).

The Owl and the Pussycat

Last night I was a guest at a Melbourne art gallery I had until recently volunteered at for several months. The Owl and the Pussycat in Richmond has been open for nearly a year now, and last night was the director's first solo exhibition, "Some Bodies".  I took my camera with the intention of documenting the event, but it wasn't until I was halfway home that I realised I had been too busy gas bagging to actually take any pictures!  It was a really great night - intreguing artworks, tasty mini pizzas, White Rabbit brews, and a comfortable amount of friendly faces to make you feel welcome.

I suggest you head down there yourselves to check it out, or email the gallery to be added to their mailing list and maybe I'll see you at the next show!

Stationary and pretty paper things

A few months back now I held a small dinner party at my new abode.  Not liking to do anything by halves, I set out to find materials to make menus, place mats, a centerpiece, place cards, etc etc.  I actually found this to be extremely difficult, finding spectacular stationary stores was a challenge, so I thought I'd share with you what I found to help make things a bit easier for you.

Believe it or not, but Lincraft have some amazing and modern products in their craft section. They have an array of scrapbooking paper, adhesives, patterned hole punches, stamps, feathers, etc, etc.

I don't know if I'm lucky or cursed to have a Card & Caboodle right next to my work, but this place is full of the most amazing cards (that I often use to make artworks), paper, embellishments, beautiful napkins and ribbons.  Definitely worth a visit.

Another gem for paper and stationary, with lots of accessories including tapes, glues, pens, as well as japanese paper and a great selection of delicate specialty papers.  Find these guys in Hawthorn.

An online store of happiness.  Go there.

Fantastic for candles, vases, votives, even cheap glasses and crockery if you need to pull together a matching set.  Try to go one evening during the weekend, because on the weekends this places turns into  a living nightmare, screaming children and slow walking couples with trolleys included.

Don't be afraid to shop online, you can find anything on here, and can get a lot of products in bulk saving a ton of money.  Just google the product you are looking for and compare costs.  See if you can source things from Australian sites before going overseas, just to speed up the shipping process (and costs).

The photo doesn't do it justice, but at least gives you an
idea of what I came up with for a "snow" theme.

Vuvuze-what?!

So the FIFA World Cup is upon us.  It's hard to avoid even if, like me, sport is as fun to watch as an airport departure board.  So tonight I head out into the city to catch Germany vs Serbia and down a few bevies with friends, although tomorrow is the big one, with Australia vs Ghana.  If you want to catch our boys head down to new bar 1000 Pound Bend tomorrow from 8pm for soccer celebrations.

Bring on the vuvuzelas!
